Easy ways to update the kid's bedroom on a budget

Show off your little one’s creativity

If you’ve got a budding artist on your hands that’s always coming home from nursery or school with their latest work of art, you’ll want somewhere to show them off. Instead of refreshing with paint and wallpaper, why not turn one of the walls into their very own art gallery? Pick a selection of photo frames; lots or just a few depending on the space you have on the wall. Get your little one to choose their favourite masterpieces and then proudly display them inside each photo frame.

A gallery wall is a great way to add splashes of colour to their room, and you can find even more ideas for creating one over on our blog.

If you’re finding there’s simply too many paintings to frame, why not stick some cork board to a wall instead? Our cork tiles come with a self-adhesive backing so they’re super easy to apply. A cork wall is also a great way to update their bedroom throughout the year, as you can simply pin up and take down pictures in an instant.

Create a doodle corner

Kids love to get creative, but when everything’s a blank canvas (including your walls), it’s time to give them their own space. Why not choose an area of their wall that’s easy to get to and turn it into a chalkboard? Simply tape off an area to the shape and size you want and apply a coat of wilko blackboard paint. Pop a pot of chalk nearby and voila...a ready-made doodle corner!

And why stop at the walls? You could use blackboard paint to jazz up drawer fronts, wardrobe doors and other furniture too!

Give old furniture a new lease of life

Don’t fork out on a brand new set of bedroom furniture when you can upcycle! That tired old chest of drawers you were going to chuck or the unloved wardrobe sat in the corner can all be lovingly restored with a little TLC and a lick of paint.

Our quick dry chalky furniture paint is the perfect choice for restoring the little one’s furniture and is available in lots of colours including Soft Taupe, Dark Duck Egg, and our personal favourite; Intense Blueberry. You could even add some colourful stickers or sections of patterned wallpaper? Don’t forget the finishing touches too with a brand new set of door knobs, and hey presto, a new piece of furniture for a fraction of the cost.

Find lots more inspiration for upcycling furniture over on our blog.

Make a magical feature wall

If you don’t have the time or money to completely refresh your little one’s bedroom walls there are still lots of ways to create a fab new look they’ll love. If they’re really into animals or just love construction vehicles then our wall stickers are a great way to brighten up their walls. They’re easy to apply, fully repositionable and quick to remove – making it a great choice for your budget makeover.

And if you’re after something more eye-catching, take a look at these wall murals. They’re perfect for creating feature walls that are guaranteed to spark your little one’s imagination. Choose from designs including magical unicorns, forest animals, dinosaurs, fairies and lots more!

See more of their floor!

When the painting and decorating is done it’s time to tackle the tidy-up! You’ve probably not seen the bedroom floor for years, so start by sorting some storage.

An ottoman is a great idea for smaller bedrooms as there’s plenty of storage space and it also doubles up as a handy seat. Choose from lots of gorgeous colours including blush pink, navy blue and ochre yellow.

And don’t forget about that unused space under their bed (that’s probably home to a few mouldy sandwiches and stale crisps too!). Our underbed storage boxes are great for clothes, toys, bedding and lots more. Simply stash it and store it out of sight.
